What You Need To Know About the 2018 Honda CR-V

That’s right, we said the new “2018” CR-V. According to automotive industry pundits, Honda plans to begin selling the all-new CR-V crossover SUV sometime in 2017 as a 2018 model.

The recently spied new 2018 Honda CR-V promises to be an evolution of one of America’s top-selling crossover SUVs, adding more interior space, a new turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, an updated cabin, stiffer chassis, a longer wheelbase, and a more aerodynamic exterior.

Award-Winning SUV Heritage

Honda engineers know well enough not to mess too much with a successful formula. After all, the 2015 Honda CR-V won Motor Trend’s prestigious “SUV of the Year” honors, so don’t expect any dramatic changes in the new 5th generation model.

Redesigned Exterior

Honda recently updated the 2016 Pilot with a more curvaceous exterior, and its smaller sibling seems to be following suit, as this pre-production “mule” would indicate.

Spy shots from MotorAuthority.com reveal that the new 2018 Honda CR-V retains its signature vertical taillights; however, they are somewhat redesigned. On previous CR-V models, the taillights matched the leading edge of the rear glass, widening out to follow the curve of the rear quarter panel at the bottom. The 2018 CR-V’s rear taillights appear to be thinner and of an “L-shape” design that cuts into either side of the liftgate.

Another spy shot shows a longer rear door between the “B” and “C” pillars. This suggests that Honda intends to add a 3rd-row, increasing passenger volume to 7.

According to Car And Driver Magazine’s Joseph Capparella, the new 2018 CR-V looks to getting a more “Acura-like” front end with a larger front grille, longer hood, and lower, wider stance. It’s rumored that the new CR-V will share some of the same underpinnings as the hot-selling and crisp-handling 2016 Honda Civic which is sure to enhance the CR-V’s already outstanding handling capabilities and driving dynamics.

New Turbocharged 4-Cylinder Engine

While Honda remains mum on the details, auto industry analysts speculate that the 2018 CR-V will add a variation of the Honda Civic’s new, 1.5-liter turbocharged Earth Dreams i-VTEC® 174-hp 4-cylinder engine mated to a continuously variable transmission. Although Honda’s new turbo 4 offers less horsepower than the CR-V’s current, normally-aspirated 2.4-liter, 185-hp engine, it generates more low-rpm torque, giving it more grunt at the low end of the engine’s power band.

Roomier Interior

On the inside, the new 2018 Honda CR-V will no doubt offer more of what you’ve come to expect from Honda’s best-selling crossover. Already leading the pack with up to 104.1 cubic feet of total interior space, the new 2018 CR-V’s most certainly will be more spacious and accommodating than ever. The CR-V currently offers a generous 70.9 cubic feet of cargo space with the 60/40 split fold-down rear seats folded flat. Behind the rear seats, you’ll get up 37.2 cubic feet of cargo space for all of your gear.

Sophistication, convenience, and luxury will also be in abundance in the new 2018 CR-V with the availability of top-grain leather seats on the EX-L and Touring models, as well as an available 10-way power driver’s seat with memory presets. As with all Hondas, the level of craftsmanship in the CR-V’s cabin is superb, with premium-grade materials throughout.

Cutting-Edge Infotainment Technology

The new CR-V will also continue its groundbreaking leadership in cutting-edge infotainment technology. The CR-V’s smartly designed 7-inch Display Audio Touchscreen positioned just above the HVAC controls in the center of the dash is an easy-to-use digital interface that controls an array of functions. Enjoy standard Bluetooth® Streaming Audio and PANDORA®, along with Bluetooth HandsFreeLink that lets you send and receive calls using your voice.

You can also expect the new CR-V to come equipped with the latest versions of Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™, allowing smartphone users to access many familiar functions directly from the Display Audio Touchscreen.

You can also upgrade your technology experience with the available Sirius XM® Radio and HD Radio® that offer crystal-clear and commercial-free programming. Additionally, the available Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™ gives you precise, voice-activated turn-by-turn directions to your destination. And the available HondaLink Next Generation® allows you to pair your compatible smartphone via a convenient USB interface, enabling you to use many of your favorite smartphone functions, including your music library, podcasts, and more.

The Most Advanced Safety Features

You can also expect the new 2018 CR-V to be equipped with some of the most advanced and comprehensive safety technology in the automotive industry. Honda’s exclusive ACE™ body structure, for example, creates a fortress-like cocoon designed to minimize the impact of a frontal collision by absorbing energy. Multiple dual-stage airbags with rollover sensors and a standard rear multi-angle backup camera with sight lines are other important ways Honda keeps you and your family safe on the road.

But for the ultimate in automotive safety, Honda’s highly sophisticated Honda Sensing™ suite of active-safety technologies provide advanced warning capabilities designed to help avoid an accident from happening in the first place. Honda Sensing consists of the following essential safety avoidance elements, including

  • Lane-Keeping Assist
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Collision Mitigation Braking

While Honda has yet to announce the official release date of the redesigned 2018 Honda CR-V, automotive experts and journalists expect the new 2018 CR-V to arrive at Honda showrooms sometime early next year.
