Honda stole the spotlight at the 2016 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit with the brand-new 2016 Honda Civic taking top honors as the newly named “2016 North American Car of the Year.”
New 2016 Civic Wins It All
More than 50 independent automotive journalists from around the world voted to give the Detroit Auto Show’s top prize to the new Civic. According to the NAIAS, “The awards are designed to recognize the most outstanding new vehicles of the year. These vehicles are benchmarks in their segments based on factors including innovation, comfort, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar.”
Finalists for one of the most prestigious awards in the automotive industry included the Chevy Malibu and Mazda MX-5 Miata. The new Civic won hands-down with a score of 203 points, followed by the Malibu with 181 points, and the Miata with 146 points.
New Turbocharged Engine
The award-winning 2016 Honda Civic drew high praise for its fresh and sporty new aerodynamic exterior completely redesigned interior, and new direct-injection 1.5-liter turbocharged i-VTEC® 4-cylinder engine that delivers a spirited 174 horsepower and 192 lb.-ft. of torque. It’s the first turbocharged engine to be offered by Honda in the U.S. market. The Civic also garnered accolades for its outstanding fuel efficiency, managing an impressive EPA-estimated 42 mpg on the highway and 31 mpg in the city.
Rugged 2017 Honda Ridgeline Debuts
Honda also made headlines at this year’s NAIAS with the dramatic unveiling of the all-new 2017 Honda Ridgeline midsize pickup. Completely redesigned from the ground up, the new Ridgeline drew a swarm of media attention as Honda president and CEO, Mr. Takahiro Hachigo joined Honda’s executive VP John Mendel to introduce the new 2nd-generation Ridgeline to the assembled crowd of media and dignitaries.
Featuring a potent 300 horsepower, 3.5-liter i-VTEC direct-injection engine, the all-new Ridgeline is offered in both two-wheel-drive and a rugged off-road capable models. The truck’s i-VTM 4 wheel-drive with Intelligent Terrain Management will be the only truck in its class to offer active torque vectoring.
The Ridgeline also features bold new sheetmetal that Honda’s John Mendal called “cool, tough, and athletic.” The Ridgeline’s new unibody construction with fully independent suspension, Mendal added, is designed to offer a more compliant, car-like ride since “the majority of Ridgeline owners will spend most of their time on the highway.”
“Make no mistake,” declared Mendal, “this is a real truck with real payload and real cargo capabilities.”
The restyled, reimagined, award-winning new 2016 Honda Civic for sale in South Florida, and the completely redesigned and all new 2017 Honda Ridgeline pickup at this year’s North American International Auto Show are but two reasons why the Honda Motor Company continues to outpace the competition as a world leader in automotive design and engineering. It’s no wonder that Honda receives the highest industry and consumer accolades year after year, including winning more “Best Cars for the Money” awards than any other automaker in 2015, according to U.S. News & World Report. And it’s also not surprising that, according to IHS-Polk, 75% of all Hondas built in the last 25 years are still on the road today.
